New Beginnings

Change and Transition

Change is hard. We hear it often, we say it often, and we often believe that it is. Whether change involves abandoning a bad habit, developing a new skill, or making a big life change, we have all experienced the fear, overwhelm, anxiety, and excitement that can accompany change.

Grief and Letting Go of the Past

It can be difficult to let go of past hurts. Hanging onto negative thoughts and feelings towards others can make us feel isolated and overwhelmed by negative emotions. Many people hang onto a lot of “emotional baggage” which in turn hinders their ability to move forward, creates distorted thinking patterns, and provides justification for feelings of victimization.

Destination / Celebration

Celebrating milestones is important, and shouldn’t just be reserved for birthdays, weddings, and graduations. Milestones come in all shapes and sizes. They may include completing an important work project, doing well on a test, finishing a major household remodel, or any number of
accomplishments. In today’s fast-paced world, people often get wrapped up in jumping right into the next task — but they forget to congratulate or reward themselves.

Purpose and Direction

Finding purpose isn’t like looking for the Holy Grail. Your purpose isn’t something that is out there waiting to be discovered. And it also isn’t true that one day when you find it – everything will be great; you will then know which path to take, and you will then be motivated to move your life forward. Purpose is created rather than found. It is something that we create, grow, and feel. Purpose is something long term that creates connectedness.

Goals

It’s pointless to start a trip without having any of idea of where you are going. Sun Tzu says “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat”. Building your purpose(s), goals and objectives will ensure a successful journey.

Wise Decision Making

Wise people are people who can ask themselves hard questions as part of knowing who they are and who they want to be. Decisions (big ones, small ones, hard one and easy ones) determine the direction and quality of our lives. The more questions we ask, the more information we have. This leads us to greater wisdom with which to make our decisions.

Identity

Personal

Human beings have a complicated relationship with change. Many people struggle to move on from their past identities and embrace their new selves. This feeling of stuck-ness and listlessness often leaves people feeling angry, scared, frustrated and hopeless about how they now think of themselves and their futures.

Social

Whether changes in our identity are the result of choices of our own or if the changes are thrust upon us – we are much more likely to be successful in the transition if we maintain old social connections, build new relationships and maintain membership in multiple groups. The support that we receive from all of these social groups can provide us with a shared identify while we transition and grow into our New Me.

Stress and Self-Care

Stress can be both helpful and harmful. Some degree of stress can assist us to stay focused and motivated to accomplish the things that are important. That is good stress. But when life’s demands and expectations exceed our capacity, we experience body arousal that slides us from good stress to distress. To manage stress successfully we need to find balance by paying attention to some critical, essential issues in our life so that we can be the Best Me that we can be.

Your core beliefs can impact every aspect of your life, from self-image to career aspirations to your sense of what’s right and wrong. Core beliefs can have a major effect on how you experience the world. They greatly shape your thought patterns, interpretations of events, and decisions.

Strengths

Character strengths are aspects of our personality that define what is best in us. They are responsible for our achievements and fulfillment. Scientists have identified 24 strengths that are the basic building blocks defining our individuality. We each possess all 24 of these strengths in different degrees and combinations. These strengths are universally valued. They lead us to positive emotions and relationships, greater vitality, and meaningful life activities. We flourish when we identify and flex our strengths.
